Yesterday we sadly learned of the passing of dear family friend Jim Riedel...In looking for photos of Jim I stumbled on these photos of family fun times in Baltimore in 200 1, where our cute little assistant ops manager learned the trade. We learned of Jim's passing just before our regular Friday Zoom call we dubbed this next week the UnFair. I was in charge of the call and appropriately we had a visit by Rod and Ellen in California as well as our buddy Tom in New Jersey. Jim's passing was a sad surprise at this annual time of year when he would always make a point of visiting. Rest in Peace...our Great Friend! County Fair was cancelled last month while the dirt dumpers continued to bring whatever quality of fill to the site just down the street. Tony Desensi was a wonderful guy! He left behind a memorable group of photos of our Museum friends that he captured over the years. His daughter Linda and her daughters gave his "Museum Friends" photos to me for safe keeping after his passing in 2011. Recently group of negatives came to light when I was cleaning out my "Stuff" from the TDB in preparation for the future use of the facility. I scanned some of the hundreds of images from the negatives and quickly picked out those shown here, many for the first time. Bill and Tony on a trip to IRM in the early 2000s. The stop served the Enterprise mine near this location on the far side of the Pennsylvania railroad track. That got me thinking about how things changed in this area over the years, both with the construction of the Washington interurban and the Museum. The Enterprise Mine site occupied the valley behind the Washington Country Club. Along about 1963 it was in the path of Interstate 79 and was largely obliterated with the construction of the highway. The Penn Pilot website (pennpilot.psu.edu) provides a 1939 aerial view of the area shown here. I excerpted a section of this photo for this page and marked it up with pho...
